Distance: Glen Tanar Forest - up to you.

Black Moss Route - 17 miles circular.

Via Mount Keen to Glen Esk 16 miles (one way).
Difficulty: Glen Tanar Forest - moderate.

Black Moss Route - difficult.

Mount Keen - very difficult.
Average Time: Glen Tanar Forest - up to you.

Black Moss Route - four hours.

Mount Keen - six hours (one way).
How to get there: Train to Aberdeen then cycle to Aboyne via Banchory (B976/B9077). By car from Aberdeen or Braemar take the A93.
Riding conditions: Quite a lot of sandy soil in the area. You may well meet horse riders, stop to let them pass.
Where to stay: Tourist Information Ballater (01339-755306) for B&Bs etc, but you'd find a B&B no problem in Aboyne.

Where to eat & drink: There are plenty of pubs and tea rooms in Aboyne which is quite near the foot of Glen Tanar. On the other side of Mount Keen, at Glen Esk, there is a tea room half way down the glen, and lots of eating places, plus B&Bs and hotels in Edzell.
