Boulders
The
Crannog
This blob shaped boulder sits alone and is the lowest of the
upper group of boulders. This group lies 50 metres up the
hill from the Bear Hug Boulder. It has been dubbed The Crannog
due to the reedcovered bog which surrounds it. Thus, a good
mat is useful to prevent wet feet. The problems, although
short are well worth doing. Descent is by the easy slab facing
up the hill and the problems are described clockwise from
here.
1. 4a
Climb the smooth but straightforward slab on its left side.
2. Reverse Gear 4c* Dave MacLeod 2002
The blunt arete to the left has a thin crack in it. Climb
the left side of the arete.
3. Boat People 5b* Dave MacLeod 2002
Climb the wall through the diagonal overlap direct on good
incut crimps.
4. 5a Dave McDonald 2002
The arete to the left, climbed on the right side without moving
into the next problem.
5. 4a Dave McDonald 2002
Climb the less steep face to the left.
6. Esprit 5b*
This problem takes the right side of the vertical wall. Stand
on the horizontal break and use a good hold to reach small
crimps on the rounded top.
7. Spree 6a (Font 6a)** Dave MacLeod 2002
This climbs the left side of the vertical wall. Use tiny holds
to pull up to a small quartz crimp (Jug on the right not allowed).
A long reach leads to a crimpy finish.
8. The Arc 6a (Font 6b)* Dave MacLeod 2002
This low level traverse circumnavigates the boulder clockwise
from the descent slab. The crux is moving round the edge left
of Spree, above the fir sapling.
